posted by Anna I absolutely love the Staple Dress pattern by April Rhodes! It's a simple, approachable pattern with a ruched waist and self sleeve. I decided to stitch it up in knit fabric to be super comfy yet cute. There are many great knit fabrics to choose from at Finch, and I ended up choosing this great black and cream geometric ponte de roma knit. It's super soft and a medium to heavy weight- great for winter. I think it is perfect!
This was my first time using a knit fabric with a pattern that was not designed with knits in mind. While I love the comfort of this dress, I really wish I would have cut the pattern a bit smaller - note to self, knit fabrics sew up a little big, so sizing down is a definite consideration if you're using a knit fabric in a woven pattern.
Using a ballpoint needle and a zig zag stitch accommodates the stretchiness and prevents running of the fabric. Elastic thread is used in the bobbin to create shirring at the waist (under my belt). We recommend Gutermann elastic thread- it seams to be the best quality on the market now. All of these supplies are available at Finch- did you know that we carry notions and supplies as well as fabric (we have a limited supply online, but much more in the actual store)?! Yup, it's true.
I honestly think this dress would look great in any knit- as long as it isn't see through (medium weight knits work best for this pattern)! Have you ever used knit fabrics on a pattern that wasn't designed for knits? If so, did you make any alterations to the original pattern?
