Tutorial: Pincushion Jars

Only a few more days until Mother's Day! Who is ready? We have a couple of ideas to help you if you are not. Today, we are giving you a simple project idea with a mom in mind, perfect for any sewist or knitter....a Pincushion Jar tutorial.

What you will need:

  • Empty (and clean) Jar
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Ribbon
  • Poly-fil
  • Scrap of fabric (or fat quarter if you need an excuse to buy more)
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock or Thick Paper
  • Pen
  • Awesomeness

Step One: Assemble Supplies

Gather all the items listed above!

You might notice there are two scraps in that picture, I am making two jars for this blog post. Before you begin the jar assembly, plug your hot glue into a nearby outlet!

Step Two: Assemble the Jar

First, trace the lid of a jar of your choice on cardstock. Cardstock is more stable than regular printing paper. You will want that stability when you glue the scrap piece of fabric onto your jar. Once you are done tracing, cut the circle out of the cardstock. After you cut your circle, use the cardstock as a template to cut out your fabric.

Next, you will make a Poly-fil sandwich with your fabric circle, Poly-fil, and cardstock circle. You only need a small amount of Poly-fil. A large amount of Poly-fil will make the glueing process more difficult, especially if your sandwich is quite full.

Now it is assembly time for the top of your jar, this will be the pincushion part! With your hot glue gun, carefully glue the fabric to your cardstock in this rhythm: glue a small amount with the hot glue gun on the card stock, pleat/fold fabric, and press fabric down into the glue. Pinch your pleat where you glued for five seconds and move onto the next fold. After you complete the pincushion, glue it to the jar lid. Then, glue the ribbon around the jar lid! Did you know we have pretty trimmings here at Finch? We sure do! Including the ones we used to make these jars.

Yay! But, you are not finished! Next, a gift for mom is what you need to place inside!

Step Three: Fill the Jar

Finch Gift Cards are always a great idea for both the Mother Knitters and Sewists! Here are some of our ideas of what to place in the gift part of the jar...

  • Bobbins

  • Snips

  • Thread

  • Embroidery or Quilting Needles

  • Sewing Machine Needles

  • Stitch Markers

  • Thimbles

  • SOAK Hand Lotion

  • Whatever Fits!

For the moms out there hoping to receive a Finchy gift, swing by before Mother's Day and begin your registry! Have you had your eyes on a BERNINA 770QE or a Knitterz Pride Interchangeable Knitting Set? Write these on your registry and let your family know to come to Finch. Ask a Finchette about how you can start your registry the next time in the store. Later on in the year, and closer to Christmastime, we hold a Guy's Night! Send in your man to do your Christmas shopping at Finch; we help them shop off your registry. Pretty cool, huh?

We hope to see you soon!
